Wheel throwing and Raku

Schedule: Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th Oct (Wheel) and Saturday 9th Nov (Raku)

Learn to throw pieces and to decorate them with the Japanese firing technique called Raku

This is what you’ll learn in this course

In this course we combine 2 techniques: you’ll learn how to throw different pieces on a potter’s wheel and how to decorate them with the Japanese firing technique called Raku.

The wheel throwing course is taught at our school, ElTornBarcelona. The Raku course is taught at the 137 degrees studio in St Celoni (Gualba train stop). We’ll tell you how to get there.

In the wheel throwing course, taught by ceramist Andrea Herrera, you`ll learn to throw several pieces, of which you’ll choose 4 for Raku techniques and 4 for glazing and firing in an electric kiln.

The Raku techniques you’ll learn are the following:

  • Naked Raku
  • Raku with specific glazes
  • Saggar Raku
  • Raku with horse hair

Pieces made with Raku are mainly decorative pieces, they are not suitable for everyday use.

In the glazing class, you’ll learn how to glaze by immersion. These pieces are functional and you can enjoy them daily.

That’s what you’ll need:

  • come with clothes you don’t mind getting stained, both for the wheel and Raku workshops
  • bring your snack – in both workshops, we’ll have a short break.

What we’ll provide:

  • all the materials and firings necessary for both workshops.
  • We’ll take care of moving your pieces to 137 degrees studio, so you can do the Raku workshop (you will take these pieces with you at the end of the workshop).
  • The pieces from the glazing class will be fired at ElTorn and we’ll let you know when to pick them up.
  • Before each workshop you’ll receive by email 2 ebooks with information about the programs.

No previous experience needed!

Price: 295€/materials and firings included.
